Royal Marines Expedition to the South Pole (UK)

I undertook extensive testing of numerous base layer systems when training for our record-breaking expedition to the South Pole, including Icebreaker.

Amongst the considerations were "will this chafe in those sensitive areas?", and, as we would inevitably perspire considerably, would the garment keep me warm, bearing in mind we would be trekking for 10-12 hours daily for approximately 70 days (72 in the end!) whilst hauling loads weighing in the region of 120kgs.

I tested Icebreaker on the beach near my hometown leading up to our expedition, and I found to my delight that a) the Icebreaker garments did not cause my sensitive areas to be chafed! AND b) whilst I still heavily perspired while undertaking the exercise, although wet I stayed pleasantly warm in the garments - which subsequently dried fairly quickly on my body

I wore the Mondo Zip top for the 71 days and 1400 miles, to and from the South Pole....with remarkably hardly any nasty odours at all! The boxers (I did have two pairs - changing after 47 days at the South Pole / turn around point!) performed remarkably well and upon my return to civilisation (having thoroughly laundered all garments!!), I now still regularly wear them when climbing, hillwalking etc.

The rest of the team wholeheartedly agreed that the Icebreaker garments were extremely comfortable, effective, didn't produce nasty odours, whilst all the time keeping them nice and warm! I would certainly recommend the range to anyone and several of my work colleagues within the Royal Marines have actually since tried, and subsequently converted from, the popular helly hansen lifa range to the Icebreaker range!
