2004
The
team at Icebreaker in Wellington wanted the opportunity to get out and
get busy in the magnificent and rugged high country that we source our
merino fibre from...maybe even share it with a few friends on the way.
So
Icebreaker and a Queenstown based events company ‘Iconic Adventures’
teamed up to investigate running an event that would let the Icebreaker
community and keen outdoor adventurers do so.
March 2005 – Inaugural Motatapu Icebreaker
The inaugural Motatapu Icebreaker event took place. With predicted
entries at 500 we were blown away when 1400 competitors entered to
either mountain biked (51 km) or run (42.2km) through three high
country merino stations starting in Wanaka and finishing in Arrowtown.
March 2006
This year Motatapu Icebreaker has reached cult status with 2500
competitors and is now the largest mountain bike event and the 3rd
largest marathon in the country (with only on-line entries!). It now
has a total of $170,000 worth of sponsor prizes.
