From Transparency to Action: How icebreaker Is Moving to Natural, One Layer at a Time
At icebreaker, we believe that nature has the answers. That’s why we’re committed to moving to natural fibres, natural innovation, and naturally progressive thinking—because creating clothes shouldn't cost the Earth.
In our latest Transparency Report, we shared our progress toward building a fully sustainable brand. From fibre sourcing to packaging, our goal is simple: less plastic, more purpose.
2025 Sustainability Highlights
We’ve made tangible progress across the board, with initiatives impacting our supply chain, design, and end-of-life product systems:
● 97.5% of fibres are now natural or plant-based
● Plastic-free packaging now used in all NZ and AU shipments
● Full traceability of merino wool through our Growers Club
Natural Materials Over Synthetics
Most outdoor gear relies on synthetic fibres that shed microplastics and take hundreds of years to break down. We’re changing that:
● Using merino wool, TENCEL™ and organic cotton to replace synthetic blends
● Innovating with shell layers that are water-repellent and reducing nylon trims where possible and replacing with natural alternatives
These changes don’t just lower our footprint—they deliver better, more breathable performance in the outdoors.
Product Innovation with Purpose
Every collection we release now includes clear sustainability targets. Here are some of the innovations you’ll find:
● ZoneKnit™ technology: strategic ventilation zones for breathability, using only
● Cool-Lite™ blends: perfect for hot climates in AU and trail runs across NZ
● Timeless classics like the 200 Oasis Long Sleeve Crew, made from 100% merino wool for natural performance and reduced impact
When you choose icebreaker, you’re not just choosing performance—you’re choosing planet-forward design.

Ethical Sourcing from the Ground Up
Our Growers Club includes merino farmers across New Zealand who are paid fairly and work within regenerative systems that restore soil health and biodiversity.
We know where every fibre comes from. Every garment has a story, and that story starts on a farm committed to doing things better.
What’s Next on Our Journey
We’re proud of our progress—but we know we’re not done. What’s coming up:
● In the next year, we aim to reach 98.7% plastic-free fabric across our range.
● We’re launching design award-winning, petrochemical-free products like Featherlight, Oasis+ Suit,
and RealFleece™, Classic PileWe’ll keep reporting openly and learning along the way.

How You Can Get Involved
● Choose gear made with natural fibres and avoid synthetics
● Support brands that publish sustainability data (like our Transparency Report)
● Wash clothes less often to save water and energy
● Participate in take-back or donation programmes when you're done with your gear
